I really like this picture. I think every monument I’ve seen to those who died in the revolution, in every city I’ve been to, has been really unique. Actually I don’t think I’ve ever seen this one before – I haven’t explored Bucharest very much – one day!
You had a revolution as recently as that? I think I need to bone up on recent world history and pay better attention to the world news section of newspapers.
This is an unusual-looking monument. Would you happen to know what the elements mean?
Some call it revolution. On the 22nd December 1989 dictator Ceausescu and his wife escaped with a helicopter from the roof of the building near the monument.
They were caught few days later, judged, sentenced to death and shot on the 25th of December 1989. But before their escape they tried to confront the masses of revolted people. They sent the army and the security troops against them – a lot of people died, especially young ones.
This monument is raised to honour them – author is Alexandru Ghildus. It is called Rebirth Memorial – it consists of this Pyramid of Triumph, with a crown in the top as a symbol of their death for freedom, Memory Wall with the names of the 1058 victims, Resurection Square – a miniatural square – with the pyramid in the middle and Victory Path- as a symbol of our way to democracy. Inauguration took place on the 1st of August 2005
